Julie is a Partner in the Aged Care and Retirement Living team at Thomson Geer. She leads the firm’s Brisbane Health and Aged Care team. The team is a unique combination of seven lawyers and two clinical consultants. Julie’s team forms part of the larger national Health and Aged Care team working across Australia.

Julie specialises in providing regulatory and commercial advice to residential aged care providers, homecare providers and retirement living operators. Julie is acknowledged as aleading provider of legal services to these industries. She has extensive experience in drafting and negotiating commercia lagreements across the health and aged care industries as well as advising clients in these industries on major incidents, coroner’s matters and disputes.

She advises a large range of aged care providers and retirement living operators including publicly listed groups, private groups and not-for-profits. She is a trusted advisor to some of the largest aged care providers in the country and was retained to act for many providers in the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

Precis

In this session we will cover some of the unique challenges and opportunities presented by operating home care in Australia under a franchise model.

Daryl Sahli is the head franchisor in Australia for Right at Home. Right at Home is an international business with over 700 offices, servicing 26,000 clients every day across the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Brazil, Japan, Australia, Netherlands and China. It is one of Australia’s largest home care companies.
Julie McStay is a legal expert in governance and compliance issues for aged care providers.

In this session Julie and Daryl will share their insights on the challenges faced by home care providers under traditional models, the impact of coming reforms on home care providers and how home care can be successfully operated under a innovative franchise model.

• A panel discussion on the role of retirement living into the future, considering
• Environmental issues, including legislative support, financial considerations, and banking
• Reviewing, reconfirming or recreating their service offer and strategic development plan for the near future (Not BE specific but informs the built form ultimately)
• Portfolio review including condition status and prioritising assets.
• Strategic master planning to complement or help shape the strategic plan
• This may lead to Development Application work to position the site for construction readiness (can be significant cost to this)
• Some test fit planning to see what could possibly be developed on their sites. (Sites are super valuable things. Esp existing sites in good locations)
• Conducting visioning workshops to shake out re-lifing potential or other possible uses for their assets going forward
